Virtual Parent Consultation with Psychologist

Meet virtually with the psychologist, to discuss your child or teen and explore treatment optionsShould the psychologist determine that in-person therapy is the most suitable option, they will then also arrange a time to meet with your child or teen in-person to commence one-to-one therapy with them.

Anxiety/Worry – Social anxiety, separation anxiety, fears/phobias, generalised anxiety, panic attacks, fear of the dark, perfectionism, stress, adjustment to trauma (e.g., car crash, serious illness, etc.), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tics, etc.

Mood Low mood/depression, self-esteem, anger/aggression, irritability, suicide ideation, self-harm, etc. 

Family/Parent-Child Relationships – communication issues, conflict resolution, attachment concerns, strengthening family bonds. 

Socialisation/RelationshipsDifficulties making or maintaining friends, anxious/withdrawn in the company of others, bullying, sibling rivalry, self-esteem, developing positive play skills, etc. 

Parental Separation/DivorceExplaining parental separation to children, preparing children for separation, helping children adjust to separation.

The Parent Consultation

Do I have to do an initial virtual parent consultation? 

Yes, before our psychologist meets with your child, it is important that they meet with you to discuss your concerns and create a treatment plan that you are happy with. 

Who will my virtual parent consultation be with? 

Your consultation will be with one of our psychologists, all of whom are Chartered Psychologists with the Psychological Society of Ireland and are highly experienced in working with  children, teenagers and their parentsThe same psychologist will also see your child or teen for one-to-one therapy 

How long is the virtual parent consultation? 

The consultation will last up to a maximum of 1 hour. 

Will the psychologist talk to my child during the virtual parent consultation? 

No, the virtual parent consultation is for parents and caregivers onlyChildren are not to be present during the consultation. 

Does the psychologist do any follow-up parent consultations? 

Yes, the psychologist will arrange to meet with you for follow-up sessions at agreed intervals and at the end of a block of treatment. 

Is it possible to provide the psychologist with some background information in relation to my child and/or the issue of concerns to me in advance of my consultation? 

After making your booking, you will be provided with an opportunity to complete an optional pre-consultation questionnaire, where you can provide additional information about your child or teen and the issues of concern to you.   This information will be read by the psychologist in advance of your consultation and will help them to get a better understanding of the issues of concern to youIf you have reports/letters/etc. that you would like the psychologist to have read in advance of your consultation, please email them to info@accesspsychology.ie at least 24 hours before you consultationPlease ensure to include the date and time of your booking in the email. 

Can both myself and my partner sit in on the virtual parent consultation?

Yes, both you and your partner can sit in on the consultation.  In fact, it is often beneficial to have both parents/caregivers present for a consultation, as the information covered is usually relevant to both of them. 

Child & Teen Therapy Sessions

Are the child and teen therapy sessions in-person or virtual?

All our child and teen therapy sessions take place in-person as we find that this works best for children and teenagers. 

Where do the therapy sessions with the psychologist take place? 

All our child and teen therapy sessions take place in the Remedy Clinic 29 Westland Square, Pearse Street, Dublin 2 (click here for directions). 

How long is each therapy session? 

Each therapy session lasts 1 hour 

How many therapy sessions will my child or teen need? 

The number of one-to-one sessions a child or teen requires is very dependent on the particular issue being addressed and how well they engage in the sessionsDuring the initial virtual parent consultation, the psychologist will decide with you how many one-to-one sessions they will do with your child or teen before they review progressFor most minor psychological issues, significant progress can often be made within six sessions. 

Can I be involved in my child or teen’s therapy sessions?

The involvement of parents in sessions is determined by the psychologist working with your child or teen. Depending on the nature of the issue, the psychologist may recommend that you participate in some sessions. 

Confidentiality & Privacy 

Is my virtual parent consultation confidential? 

Yes, virtual consultations are completely confidential and private.

Will the psychologist tell me what my child or teen says to them in the therapy session? 

During the follow-up feedback sessions, the psychologist will give you an overview of the issues covered in the therapy sessionsHowever, the psychologist will not break the child or teen’s confidentiality by detailing what they have said in sessions. 

Is what my child or teen says to the psychologist during the therapy sessions confidential?

Yes, what your child or teen says to the psychologist is confidential but there are limits to this confidentiality (see next FAQ). 

What if my child or teen says something to the psychologist that leads them to be concerned for their wellbeing or that of someone else? 

Although what your child or teen says to the psychologist is confidential, there are limits to this confidentiality and this is to do with potential harm or riskIf your child or teen says something that leads the psychologist to believe that they or someone else is at risk, they are legally obliged to report it to TuslaIf the psychologist does report a concern to Tusla, they will inform you of this and discuss with you the issue of concern. 

What information does Access Psychology keep on my child? 

During the virtual parent consultation and the therapy sessions with your child or teen, the psychologist may take notes which will form part of your child or teen’s electronic health record (EHR). If you complete the pre-consultation questionnaire or provide Access Psychology with any other documentation, this will also form part of your EHR.  The EHR is stored securely and confidentially in line with GDPR legislation 

Can I access the information held on my child or teen by Access Psychology? 

You have a right to a copy of your child or teen’s electronic health record (EHR) to verify its accuracy or to ask for it to be supplemented, deleted, updated or corrected. If you would like a copy of your child’s EHR, please email info@accesspsychology.ie requesting same and a copy will be provided to you within 30 days
