Adult Psychoeducational Assessments

Learning difficulties are often misunderstood

Learning difficulties like dyslexia can significantly impact various aspects of your life, often being mistaken for attention or behaviour problems.
These challenges can affect your confidence,
daily tasks, and overall quality of life

Our Procedure

Explore our comprehensive assessment procedure by diving into the circle below. Each step of the journey is laid out, providing a clear roadmap for your understanding

Step 1

Book initial consultation

Book an initial virtual consultation with one of our child psychologists at a date and time that suits you

Step 2

Complete Online Questionnaires

We will send you some questionnaires to complete online about your education history before your consultation

Step 3

Consultation with Psychologist

The psychologist will meet with you online to learn more about your learning history, the nature of the current challenges. The psychologist will ask about development, co-ordination and movement, as well as the learning history of the wider family. We will also ask regarding the current suspected difficulty and this will allow us program an individually tailored assessment using our digital system.

Step 4

Comprehensive In-Person Testing

We will undertake in-person testing at our clinic in Dublin. The assessment will include exploring aspects of your cognitive ability to identify areas of specific difficulty, executive functioning to explore how information is processed and then how all of this impacts academic performance.

Step 5

Analysis and report

This part is for us. We will do an analysis of all of the information we collect and will look to understand any difficulties and identify them. We will have a solid understanding of individual strengths and challenges and can provide information around subjects which may or may not suit best, learning challenges which may require support or intervention, reasonable accommodations at work or upon return to education. We will put all of this in our comprehensive written report.

Step 6

Feedback with Psychologist

The psychologist will meet with you virtually to give feedback on the assessment and provide you with a written report. We will advise you on any diagnosis made and offer guidance on the next steps to support your needs effectively.

Wondering if You Need an Assessment? Here are some common signs that an assessment may benefit you:

Struggling at Work: If you consistently face difficulties with tasks such as reading, writing, managing numbers, or organising your work despite efforts to improve, it could be a sign of underlying learning difficulties.

Learning Challenges:Difficulty mastering essential skills like time management, note-taking, or problem-solving may suggest the need for an assessment to uncover specific learning challenges.

Behavioural Concerns: Persistent issues with focus, impulsivity, or disruptive behavior in professional or personal settings may indicate attention-related issues or undiagnosed learning difficulties.

Lack of Progress: If you’re not making expected progress in your career or personal development despite interventions, support, and extra effort, it could be a sign of underlying learning difficulties.

Exams: Exams can highlight specific challenges where a student may perform well with ongoing assessments but struggles in an exam setting due to time pressure or other factors.

Performance Under Pressure: Struggling in high-pressure situations like exams, presentations, or deadlines despite performing well in less stressful environments may highlight specific challenges that an assessment can help identify.

Types of Learning Difficulties

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects reading and language-based processing skills. Adults with dyslexia may struggle with reading comprehension, spelling, writing, and sometimes speaking.

Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects mathematical skills. Adults with dyscalculia may have trouble with arithmetic, remembering numbers, understanding time, and spatial reasoning.

Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is a learning difficulty that affects writing abilities. Adults with dysgraphia may have difficulties with spelling, handwriting, and organising thoughts on paper.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain processes spoken language. Adults with APD may struggle to understand and remember information they hear, following directions, and distinguishing between similar sounds.

Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD)

Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD) affects spatial and visual-spatial processing. Adults with NVLD may struggle with interpreting nonverbal cues, motor skills, and visual-spatial tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What Is a psychoeducational assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment focuses on understanding cognitive skills and abilities in an academic context. It identifies intellectual giftedness, learning difficulties, behavioural issues, and emotional concerns. The assessment typically involves standardised tests, clinical interviews, and observations

What Are the benefits of a psychoeducational assessment?

Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses: Our assessments will pinpoint specific areas of strength and areas of concern, such as ADHD, dyslexia, or executive functioning difficulties.

Tailored Support: Our recommendations have personalised interventions, accommodations, and strategies to help individuals reach their full potential.

Self-Understanding: Understanding one’s cognitive profile fosters self-awareness and self-advocacy and our assessments will provide the basis for this understanding.

Who should consider an assessment?

Students: Adolescents and college students benefit from assessments to address learning challenges and develop personalised optimised learning strategies. Our assessments and reports will provide the basis for developing these strategies.

Adults: Adults seeking career changes, accommodations in the workplace, or understanding their cognitive strengths and weaknesses can benefit from our assessments.

Do I need a referral for an assessment?

A referral from a GP or another healthcare professional is not required for a psychoeducational assessment. You can speak directly with us and seek an assessment if you suspect learning difficulties or need support.

What are reasonable accommodations (RACE)

Reasonable Accommodations for Certificate Examinations (RACE) are a number of supports designed for students who are at a disadvantage due to disability.  Reasonable accommodations are designed to mitigate as far as possible the impact of disability upon students’ performance in exams. Some examples relating to specific learning difficulties might include a spelling and grammar waiver, assistive technology to help with reading, or reading support.  Other accommodations relate to the location of the exam, with some students requiring a smaller classroom rather than a large exam hall. Each accommodation requires evidence of difficulty, which our assessments are sufficient in identifying.

The Assessment

What does the assessment involve?

Typically, a comprehensive assessment of this nature will involve at least a 1-hour interview in advance, the completion of questionnaires and approximately 120 minutes of in person testing. A 1-hour feedback session with you is also offered where the findings are explained to you by the psychologist who completed the assessment.

Can the assessment be done online?

Yes, it can be provided over the platform of Zoom, with some preparation in advance.

Who conducts the assessment?

Our fully qualified chartered psychologists conduct the assessments. Their qualifications ensure accurate evaluations. Our reports are accepted by organisations like the Department of Education and the HSE and most employers.

Will the assessment report be accepted by DARE/RACE/School?

Yes, all of our psychologists have the appropriate qualifications and are chartered clinical, counselling or educational psychologists with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI)

What’s in the assessment report?

The assessment report will contain a lot of information which is useful for the individual, educators, and employers.  The report will have descriptions of the cognitive abilities of the individual, covering their verbal and nonverbal skills, their visualspatial abilities, along aspects of memory and speed. The Psychologist will explain what these are individually and also how the various strengths and challenges interact and the potential implications of these.

We will also have a point-in-time measure of academic ability, which can be used to indicate areas for improvement and to track progress made from our recommendations.

The report will importantly contain individualised recommendations and strategies for education, work, and home and to receive appropriate support.
